Things to do in San Francisco on Friday, October 9, 2026: Parade of Ships 11 a.m., Blue Angels noon–4 p.m., free band concerts, the last Chinatown Night Market of 2026, Front Street party and concerts, with addresses.

Things to do in San Francisco today, Friday, October 9, 2026, start on the water and end in Chinatown: the Fleet Week Parade of Ships sails under the Golden Gate Bridge at 11 a.m., the Blue Angels air show fills the sky over the Marina from noon to 4 p.m., free military bands play in a dozen neighborhoods, and in the evening the Chinatown Night Market takes over five blocks of Grant Avenue while Rod Wave plays Chase Center, My Morning Jacket opens a three-night run at The Fillmore and the Dead Kennedys return to The Regency Ballroom. This guide gives the times, exact addresses, prices where they are published and the transit changes you need, hour by hour, SFNews.us reports.
The weather helps: Friday is the warmest and calmest of the Fleet Week days, with a forecast high of 71 degrees in the city, mostly sunny skies and a breeze gusting to about 21 mph. From Saturday it turns cooler and windier, so if you only have one day for the waterfront, today is it. Jefferson Street at Fisherman’s Wharf is closed to cars from 6 a.m., and robotaxis cannot pick up on the northern waterfront between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Morning and afternoon: Fleet Week on the waterfront
Parade of Ships, 11 a.m.
From 11 a.m. to noon, Navy and Coast Guard ships enter the Bay under the Golden Gate Bridge, led by San Francisco Fire Department fireboats spraying water, and sail east along the northern waterfront. Friday is the only day of the parade. The best views of the ships under the bridge are from Crissy Field, Fort Point and the Marin Headlands; once they are inside the Bay, the Marina Green, Fort Mason, Aquatic Park and Pier 39 all have close views. There are no ship tours on Friday; they run on Saturday and Sunday at Piers 27 and 35.
Air show, noon to 4 p.m.
The air show is centered on the Marina Green and runs over the Bay between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. The lineup includes the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the Patriots Jet Team, an F-22 Raptor demonstration and a United Airlines 777 flypast; the Blue Angels usually fly in the last hour. Watching is free from public land, and premium seating on the Marina Green is sold separately. Our full guide to the 20 best places to watch the Parade of Ships and the Blue Angels has addresses, transit and timings for every spot.

Museums and indoor options
If the waterfront is not for you, Friday is a good day for museums before the weekend crowds. In Golden Gate Park, the de Young Museum at 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive and the California Academy of Sciences at 55 Music Concourse Drive face each other across the Music Concourse, a short walk from the noon Navy band concert at the Band Shell. Downtown, SFMOMA is at 151 Third Street, and the Exploratorium is on Pier 15 at The Embarcadero and Green Street, close to the eastern end of the Fleet Week action. Check each museum’s website for Friday hours and timed tickets. Note that free museum day for Bay Area residents at the de Young and the Legion of Honor is Saturday, not today; details are in our weekend guide.
Litquake
Litquake, San Francisco’s literary festival, began on Thursday, October 8, and runs until October 24, with readings, author talks and poetry across the city. Many events are free or low cost; the festival’s schedule lists venues and times. It is a calm counterpoint to the jets, and several events are in bookshops and bars in North Beach and the Mission.
Evening: Chinatown Night Market
The Chinatown Night Market is on tonight, the second Friday of the month and the last edition of the 2026 season, which runs from May to October. Food and entertainment fill five blocks of Grant Avenue around its intersection with Washington Street, with games and seating on two blocks of Waverly Place. More than 40 vendors, most of them Chinatown restaurants and shops, sell street food, and since 2025 the stage has featured up-and-coming Asian American DJs and performers. The market is organized by the Civic Joy Fund with BeChinatown San Francisco and draws between 10,000 and 18,000 visitors each month. Tonight, as part of Fleet Week, the 1st Marine Division Brass Band plays at 6 p.m.
The market runs from about 5 to 9 p.m.; SFMTA lists the start as 5:30 p.m. Streets close from 1 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. for setup: Grant Avenue between California Street and Pacific Avenue, Commercial Street between Kearny Street and Grant Avenue, and the intersection of the two. No Muni lines are rerouted, but Stockton Street and the Broadway Tunnel will be slow. The quickest way in is the T Third line to Chinatown–Rose Pak Station at Stockton and Washington, one block from the market.
Where to eat around the market
The market is the main event, but these long-standing Chinatown places are within a few blocks if you want a sit-down meal or something to take home. Opening hours vary and some close early, so check before you go.

Evening: free yacht rock on Front Street
Fridays on Front Street becomes a Fleet Week block party tonight from 4 to 9 p.m. around 240 Front Street in the Financial District, with yacht rock bands, lip-sync battles, oysters, signature cocktails, bar specials and an outdoor screening of Top Gun. Entry is free with an Eventbrite RSVP. It is a short walk from Embarcadero BART and Montgomery Street BART, so it suits anyone coming straight from work, and it is an easy hop from there to Chinatown.

My Morning Jacket and the Dead Kennedys

At The Regency Ballroom, the Dead Kennedys, formed in San Francisco in 1978, play a hometown show at 7:30 p.m. Both venues are on the 38 Geary line and well away from the Fleet Week traffic. Full concert listings for the weekend are in our San Francisco concerts guide.
Theater, film and comedy
At the Curran Theatre, 445 Geary Street, The Terminator is screened with a live orchestra performing the score at 7:30 p.m. SNL alum Emil Wakim plays Cobb’s Comedy Club, 915 Columbus Avenue in North Beach, across Friday and Saturday. For something louder, Public Works at 161 Erie Street hosts Monster’s Ball from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., a Halloween-flavored night with aerialists, stand-up and DJs. Neighborhood walks for Friday afternoon
North Beach
Start at City Lights Bookstore, 261 Columbus Avenue, the Beat-era bookshop, and Vesuvio Cafe next door at 255 Columbus. Walk up Columbus Avenue to Washington Square, where Saints Peter and Paul Church stands at 666 Filbert Street; it is where Sunday’s Italian Heritage Parade ends. Stop for coffee at Caffe Trieste, 601 Vallejo Street, and continue up the Filbert Steps toward Coit Tower for a view of the air show. Note that Powell Street between Columbus and Union is closed all weekend.
Hayes Valley and Civic Center
Begin at Patricia’s Green at Hayes and Octavia streets for the noon Marine brass band, then browse the independent shops along Hayes Street. City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, is a few blocks east; its Voting Center is open on weekdays for the November 3 election. In the evening, the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium at 99 Grove Street and the Great American Music Hall are within a short walk.
The Mission
The Mission is the warmest, least windy part of the city and far from the Fleet Week crowds. Walk from Dolores Park along 18th Street and Valencia Street, see the murals in Balmy Alley and Clarion Alley, between Mission and Valencia off 17th Street, and finish at one of the music venues: Bottom of the Hill on Potrero Hill or The Independent on Divisadero Street.
With children
For families, the best Friday plan is the Parade of Ships and the start of the air show from Fort Mason’s Great Meadow, which has space to run around, followed by Musée Mécanique on Pier 45 and an early dinner. Ear defenders help with the jets. Indoors, the Exploratorium on Pier 15 and the California Academy of Sciences are reliable choices. The Chinatown Night Market is busy but family-friendly, with games on Waverly Place; go at 5 p.m. before the crowds peak.
Elsewhere in the Bay Area tonight
Outside the city, Mastodon play the Fox Theater, 1807 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, with doors at 6 p.m.; Slightly Stoopid are at the Frost Amphitheater at Stanford from 4 p.m.; High on Fire play the UC Theatre, 2036 University Avenue in Berkeley, with doors at 7 p.m.; Musiq Soulchild has two shows at Yoshi’s, 510 Embarcadero West in Oakland; and the tribute band Rumours of Fleetwood Mac plays the Mountain Winery in Saratoga at 7:30 p.m. Our Bay Area weekend guide covers the rest.

Weather and what to wear
Friday’s forecast is mostly sunny with a high of 71 degrees and a low of 58, with the breeze picking up through the day and gusts to 28 mph in the evening. It will feel cooler on the waterfront and after sunset, so bring a light jacket for the night market and outdoor concerts. A Coastal Flood Advisory starts at 9 a.m. today and lasts until Tuesday, with the highest tides around midday from Saturday; it is a reason to keep away from low waterfront paths rather than to change your plans. Our weather report on Hurricane Rachel and the Bay Area has the details.
